Could the increase of surveillance by governments lead to lack of free-thinking individuals and instead, promote compliance with the current socio-political system? With the government of the United Kingdom recently introducing a counter-extremism bill that labels those who question government policy as potential terrorists, increased state surveillance may suppress freedom of speech and individuality through fear of non-compliance. Should we accept the views dictated to us, for fear of otherwise standing out?
