Petticoat trousers were outer garments typical of sailors in Western European maritime nations. This reproduction is constructed from a heavy hemp sailcloth with pewter buttons and leather lace to secure an adjustable waistband. The wide, ultilitarian fit of this garment is designed for ease of movement and to allow layering over knee breeches. It is achieved by gathering the considerable circumference of the garment into a waistband and securing with two rows of whip stitches. There are no pockets on these petticoat trousers, instead, two slashes at the side seams allow for access into the breeches’ pockets below.
