A handwoven historical reconstruction of the Bronze Age woman's belt from Borum Eshoj in Denmark

BELT

BORUM ESHØJ
ca. 1350 BCE

The woman’s belt from Borum Eshøj is a finely made woolen band with a central stripe and decorative tassels. This interpretation is handwoven in single-ply wool, with 38 warp threads as per the original garment. Additional threads are joined at the belt terminals to create the 103 individual fringe elements, secured with two rows of chain stitches in a lighter wool. The band ends are finished in oversewn loops, threaded together on a cord to form a dense cone of tassels. The length of this belt and position in the grave suggest it was wrapped twice around the waist, and could be worn with the bronze discs famous in nordic sites.
