Mail Coif
MEDIEVAL EUROPE
1220 - 1400 CE
From the end of the 12th century in Western Europe, we begin to see the integrated mail coif of the hauberk transition into a stand-alone garment. This reproduction is constructed from riveted steel rings linked in a 4-1 weave, a common method of constructing mail in medieval Europe in which each ring is linked to four other rings. It is closely tailored to the head to reduce weight, with two leather drawstrings securing the garment at the nape and allowing for adjustment of the face opening.
