A hand sewn historical replica of an 18th century man's linen shirt, with gathers and Dorset buttons

Linen Shirt

EARLY MODERN EUROPE
1690 - 1750 CE

A foundational layer of men’s dress, this linen shirt is based on styles worn in Western Europe around the turn of the 18th century. Hand-sewn in plain linen, it features a narrow collar fastened with hand-worked Dorset knob buttons. The collar, cuffs and sleeve heads feature fine gathers shape the otherwise rectilinear cut of the garment. Triangular gussets reinforce the neckline and sleeves are finished with paired buttonholes to accommodate sleeve links, a typical feature of shirts in this period.
