This neckerchief was a common dress accessory worn in the late 17th and 18th century. Commonly seen on depictions of working men and sailors, it was often worn over the outer garments, concealing the shirt collar and sometimes the shoulders. A square of plain or printed fabric, it could be knotted in a variety of ways, commonly folded into a triangle and tied snugly around the neck. It appears a fashion to wear the neckerchief in a looser manner developed in the later 18th century. This garment is an off-white linen with a rolled hems.
