Tablet Woven girdle
ANGLO-SAXON
500 - 700 CE
This tablet-woven band is an interpretation of an early Anglo-Saxon woman’s girdle. Although buckled leather belts are found in up to a third of graves in Anglo-Saxon cemeteries, there is evidence for textile girdles, despite their poor preservation in the archaeological record. The pattern for this band is based on a find from Grave II at the Snartemo farm excavations in Norway, dating to around 500 AD. It is tablet-woven in 2-ply wool and finished with a fringe at each end.
