A handmade historical reconstruction of a Bronze Age man's cap from Jels, Denmark

CAP

JELS
ca. 1348 BCE

Predominantly two styles of men’s cap appear in the archaeological record of the Nordic Bronze Age, a textured domed cap, and a tall cap such as this, as found in Jels and Trindhøj. The Jels cap, upon which this reconstruction is based, consists of an elaborate pattern of eight panels, shaped to form a gradual cone. This resconstruction is in fulled handwoven wool and sewn with single ply woolen thread. The base of the cap is oversewn with buttonhole stitches, as is the extant garment.
