This ubiquitous style was adopted during the late Roman period and appears to last throughout the Middle Ages. We have 7th-10th Century textile remains from Leens, Netherlands, a 9th Century find from Haithabu/Hedeby, Germany and several examples among the 15th Century Norse textile finds of Herjolfsnes, Greenland. This cap is a simple construction, with a pieced circular top panel and a single continuous side panel. Constructed in a 2/2 wool twill vaðmál as per Herjolfsnes D10610, the cap is finished with a felled edges and overcast stitches.
